The Iconic Barcelona Chair

I graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Furnishings and Interiors. The absolute best degree they offer for gals like me! In one course, we were asked to draw the most iconic chairs in history and so I discovered my favorite chairs were from the Bauhaus period. A little about the Bauhaus movement. The Bauhaus school of design was created in Germany and only existed for 14 years from 1919-1933. It’s mission was to unite art and functional design. The ultimate goal was to create designs that were both functional and pleasing to the eye which is where the ideal, form follows function originated. The Barcelona chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in conjunction with architect and Interior Designer, Lilly Reich. It is in my opinion, the best marriage of this school of thought. The chair is so sleek, yet very comfortable. It is likely the most commonly reproduced chair from this time period and is used in offices and homes alike. Personally, I love the idea of having a little fun with side chairs. The mix of traditional elements and contemporary designs brings a sense of unexpected originality to a space. Below are a few photos of Barcelona chairs on movie sets and in living rooms. I’ve linked a few options to purchase as well! This sight contains affiliate links.
